Common questions

Full face helmet questions

Can I wear a full face helmet for road cycling?

It is possible but heavy and hot for road use.

Do full face helmets come in youth sizes?

Yes, youth sizes exist for dirt bike and ATV riding.

What head circumference does small to medium fit?

Small to medium typically fits 55 to 58 cm.

Are the fit pads removable?

Some models offer removable fit pads for adjustment.

What a full face helmet covers

A full face mountain bike helmet wraps the head and chin in a single shell. The chin bar is fixed, not removable. Padding lines the inside, and a dial or strap system holds the fit. These are built for downhill, enduro, and motocross riding where a standard open helmet leaves the jaw exposed.

How it differs from an open helmet

An open helmet leaves the face and chin uncovered. A full face helmet adds a chin bar and more shell coverage around the jaw and cheeks. That extra material adds weight and reduces airflow compared to a road or trail helmet. You trade ventilation for protection.

Sizes, materials, and fit details

Sizing runs by head circumference in centimeters. A common range is 55 to 58 cm for small to medium. Some models offer removable fit pads so you can adjust the interior volume. Others use a dial system at the back for tension.

Shells are hard plastic or composite. Liners are foam. Some models include a magnetic sun visor that detaches without tools. Venting varies: some have large open ports, others are closed for downhill use. Youth sizes exist for kids riding dirt bikes and ATVs.

When to pick a full face

Choose a full face helmet for lift-served downhill, enduro stages, or motocross. The chin bar matters when you are likely to go over the bars or slide out on loose ground. If you pedal up long climbs in heat, an open helmet moves more air.
